30 students will be selected each Summer and will receive a stipend of $1,500 per student.

The University of Texas at Houston School of Biomedical Informatics and the School of Public Health is excited to lead the Gaining Equity in Training for Public Health Informatics and Technology (GET PHIT) consortium. The University of Texas at Arlington is a member of the consortium and will collaborate with other universities and multiple state organizations to provide students and health professionals with informatics and technology training to provide more effective ways to manage modern technology, increase the number of minority health professionals and students trained in informatics and technology, and expand the public health workforce. 

The two-week in-person summer bootcamp is for students who may be interested in public health informatics. They will be offered in different locations each summer, open to all currently enrolled undergraduate students. An eight-week online summer bootcamp option is also available. 

The GET PHIT Consortium program is supported by The Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology 

Timeline

• 2 weeks long

Eligibility: 

• All majors welcome, but must have a strong interest in public health informatics and data science  

Hands-On experience: 

Students will spend the second week working on a research project. Potential projects include: 

• Building decision making dashboards for rural public health departments 
• Developing algorithms to identify risk factors for various conditions 
• Students may develop their own project ideas with the faculty mentor 

Benefits: 

• Students who successfully complete the bootcamp will be eligible for fall paid internships 
• Students will be eligible for in-person summer bootcamp stipends   

Setting:

• The GETPHIT Bootcamp at UTA is held in the School of Social Work/ College of Nursing and Health Innovation Smart Hospital Building. This new facility hosts a state-of-the-art Health Informatics classroom and laboratory.
